Welcome to the John E. Stowell Dahlia Society website!

The Dahlia, a native of Mexico, was introduced in 1789 into Spain. The plant was named in honor of Dahl, the Swedish botanist.  Dahlias are represented today exclusively by hybrids and strains of bush and bedding dahlias.  Through centuries of hybridizing and selection, dahlias have become tremendously diversified, with numerous flower types in all colors but true blue.

John E. Stowell was a dahlia grower who lived in Sunnyvale. He hybridized numerous  dahlias and was much loved and respected by all who met him.  Our dahlia society, founded in 1988, took his name to honor him. This site is intended to provide useful information to anyone, novice or expert, interested in growing beautiful dahlias.  Enjoy exploring our website.
